Public Media has always been rooted in a mission of public service – providing trusted information, enriching education and building stronger, more informed communities. Public media was created for every American citizen, but for American military families who may not be home when they want to be, the role of public media carries a particularly deep resonance.
Across the country, military spouses, children, and veterans are navigating unique challenges – frequent moves, deployments and the emotional weight of service. At Pennon and across the public media system, we recognize that our job isn’t just to inform; it’s to connect. And for military families, that connection is more than content. It’s community.
The military and public media share more than a mission of service – we share a belief in the unwavering power of community.
Meeting Military Families Where They Are
Pennsylvania has the fifth-largest veteran population in the country, and the opportunities to support those who serve cannot be overlooked. Military families are resilient members of our communities, but they also face unique stressors that can lead to feelings of isolation. With each PCS (permanent change of station), children must start over at new schools, spouses must rebuild support networks and families must quickly acclimate to unfamiliar places.
Public media serves as a constant in this cycle of change. Whether through local news that helps newcomers feel rooted, a connection to their community by reading stories about local elections or their favorite restaurants, or educational programming that supports young learners, our stations are uniquely equipped to meet military families where they are – both geographically and emotionally.
A Trusted Educational Ally
When military families are stationed overseas, children’s programming comes down to more than entertainment. Children’s programming is an educational lifeline, keeping families connected to culture, language and memories from home. Initiatives like PBS LearningMedia offer standards-aligned, curriculum-friendly tools for parents and teachers alike — resources that are free, accessible and trusted.
Amplifying Military Voices
“Public media honors and supports those who serve our country by telling their stories of commitment, courage and leadership,” said Pat Harrison, CPB president and CEO.

As we commemorate Flag Day, we honor those who serve and have served in the United States Armed Forces to uphold and protect freedom and all the American flag represents.
